10 Commonly Misdiagnosed ADHD Symptoms

Mood swings. Sleeplessness. Oppositional behavior. If you or your child exhibits these ADHD symptoms, you may rightfully get a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Or you may have another condition altogether. How to tell if your doctor got your evaluation right.

  1. For the adults with ADHD or parents of struggling teens out there – many of these misdiagnosed symptoms speak only towards how they present in young children and symptoms that don’t appear until late teens & adulthood are omitted entirely.

For example – ‘Problems at School’ should also say ‘AND WORK’ – no one is going to think an adult struggling at work despite previous academic success can’t pay attention, much less have a learning disability. Both problems at school AND WORK stem from the same ADHD root causes in executive functioning.

Symptoms misdiagnosed in adults only, notably such as ADDICTION/ALCOHOLISM are omitted entirely and often treated (unsuccessfully) as the main diagnosis instead of as a comorbidity of untreated adult ADHD. Saying this from first-hand experience, as no amount of 12-step programs or inpatient rehab (where I wasn’t allowed to take my ADHD medication, no less) successfully treated my addiction until I ALSO sought treatment (beyond medication) for ADHD as an adult.
