Episode Description
Anxiety is common among school-aged children, and those with ADHD are at higher risk than their peers. Children may be anxious because their attention deficit disorder makes life difficult, or they may have aggravated attention problems because of an underlying anxiety disorder. The importance of a proper evaluation to distinguish the primary diagnosis — anxiety or ADHD — is critical to managing symptoms as a child grows. Remember that anxiety in a family member will affect everyone else. Effective treatments exist for anxiety and attention issues, and each family will need to consider which is most likely to help.
Here, pediatricians and authors Eileen Costello, M.D., and Perri Klass, M.D.will discuss the high prevalence of anxiety disorders in children with ADHD and learning differences. Learn about ways that anxiety can precede and accompany these diagnoses as kids and families develop strategies to accommodate a world not designed with them in mind.
In this webinar you will learn:
- The prevalence of anxiety in children with ADHD and learning differences
- How symptoms of a primary anxiety disorder overlap and are distinct from symptoms of ADHD
- Why evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the “gold standard” for treatment of childhood anxiety
- How families can develop language to help kids understand and talk about their anxiety
- The importance of developing “distress tolerance” in childhood and adolescence to decrease risks of resorting to unhealthy stress-management habits
