Episode Description
Zoom classes, Discord chats with friends, FaceTime dates. The pandemic have irrevocably altered our social routines, but now that in-person classes are opening again, the question is: Is your child ready to socialize in real life — face to face, one on one?
Social anxiety is real, and its sources are different for girls and boys. When ADHD is factored into the mix, feelings of trepidation make all the more sense. No wonder students feel hesitant or rusty when their social skills have remained dormant for more than a year.
In this webinar, Caroline Maguire, M.Ed., a leader in social-skills development and the author of Why Will No One Play With Me?, will help parents, clinicians, and educators recognize the signs of social anxiety and learn the coaching skills they need to help children and teens return to in-person school with confidence.
In this webinar, you’ll learn how to:
- Understand the signs of social anxiety and how they present differently in girls and boys
- Embrace the concept of accepting “social awkwardness” and learn how to work through it
- Learn how to use social strategies like open-ended questions and small asks
- Teach the child or teen to recognize and understand his or her body signals when he or she is overwhelmed socially
- Practice listening, sharing, and collaboration techniques
- Feel comfortable shaking hands, joining a group, returning to in-door masked events
