ADHD is the most common mental health condition in children today and second only to asthma as the most common chronic childhood illness. With increasing regularity, primary pediatric care clinicians play a key role in properly diagnosing and effectively treating children with ADHD. To aid this process, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) revised its ADHD clinical guidelines last year to promote optimal care for children with the condition. Understanding these new standards of care will empower parents to work effectively with their pediatricians.

Mark L. Wolraich, M.D., is the Shaun Walters Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics and the Edith Kinney-Gaylord Presidential Professor at the University Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He was the Chief of the Section of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics there for the past 17 years until June 2018. Dr. Wolraich has been active nationally in the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) particularly relating to ADHD. He is a member and past president of the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. Dr. Wolraich developed the Vanderbilt ADHD Behavior Rating Scales that are now used widely nationally and internationally.| See expert’s full bio »
Joseph F. Hagan, Jr., M.D., FAAP is Clinical Professor in Pediatrics at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and UVM Children’s Hospital. He is co-editor of The Bright Futures Guidelines, Third and Fourth Editions, the standard of preventive care for American infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. Dr. Hagan served as vice-president and president of the American Academy of Pediatrics Vermont Chapter. Dr. Hagan has wide media experience, has published extensively, presented nationally and internationally and has received numerous awards recognizing his work.
