Episode Description
ADHD is the most common mental health condition in children today and second only to asthma as the most common chronic childhood illness. With increasing regularity, primary pediatric care clinicians play a key role in properly diagnosing and effectively treating children with ADHD. To aid this process, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) revised its ADHD clinical guidelines last year to promote optimal care for children with the condition. Understanding these new standards of care will empower parents to work effectively with their pediatricians.
Listen and learn from Mark L. Wolraich, M.D., and Joseph F. Hagan, Jr., M.D., FAAP, about:
- How doctors can optimize the diagnosis process by interviewing both parents and the child, plus other strategies
- The importance of ruling out other causes of ADHD-like symptoms and identifying comorbid conditions, like mood disorder and anxiety
- The challenges of implementing the new guidelines — namely, less-than-adequate pediatric training in mental health, limited insurance coverage of needed services, limited consultative services, and barriers to communication with schools and consultative services
- The key role behavior rating scales play in diagnosing ADHD and in monitoring a child in school and the community
- The most effective ADHD treatment options that primary care clinicians may employ
- Which treatment should come first: ADHD medication or behavior parent training, or something else?
- The many benefits of follow-up care for children diagnosed with ADHD and when referrals for other care are needed
- New technology to improve the quality of care for better patient outcomes
