Free Webinar Replay: How ADHD Shortens Life Expectancy: What Parents and Doctors Need to Know to Take Action

In this hour long webinar on-demand, learn about the impact of ADHD on health outcomes with Russell Barkley, Ph.D.

Most parents raising a child with ADHD know that the disorder may lead to poor performance in school, failed friendships, and rampant disorganization. However, very few parents and clinicians know that ADHD predisposes children and young adults to increased health and medical risks that may shorten their life expectancy. ADHD behaviors and personality traits like impulsivity, poor emotional control, and sensory- or risk-seeking behaviors may result in health problems and premature death.

Research shows that that most effective way to reverse this disturbing trend is early diagnosis and treatment of ADHD with medication and evidence-based psychosocial treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy.

In this webinar you will learn:

  • the reasons why ADHD is more than just a mental health disorder but a public health disorder
  • the impact of childhood ADHD on health outcomes
  • the importance of educating primary care physicians about ADHD and shorter life expectancy
  • why parents need to pay as much attention to their child’s health-related activities as they do to school, social, and family activities

Webinar replays include:

  • Related resources from ADDitude
  • Free newsletter updates about ADHD

  1. Grateful to Dr. Barkley’s devotion and persistence in this challenging field – a beacon in the dark for me as a mother of a teen boy with ADHD+depression+anxiety+suicidal. Medications have been minimally effective to date, though we persist to find a better combination. Out of desperation, we are considering hypnotherapy to address PTSD from years of school failure. Has Dr. Barkley ever heard of hypnotherapy as a beneficial therapeutic tool for kids with ADHD?

  2. Dr Barkley, huge fan and owner of four of your books. Anything more I can learn as a mother of four children diagnosed ADHD and diagnosed myself thirteen years now. I have no doubts that a person with ADHD would have a less life expectancy. My oldest son had a motorcycle wreck last June. Ended up with 40% 3rd degree burn/road rash and was in hospital, burn unit for 32 days. So lucky to be alive. Less life expectancy not to mention the economic burden.
