More than a few children with ADHD have difficulty understanding oral instructions and information. They hear the words and repeat them back, but they can’t retain and interpret the message encoded in the words. For many of these children, a language-processing disorder may be impairing their ability to attach meaning to verbal input and to formulate an appropriate response.
Children with language deficits may take a long time to respond to a question, feel lost when listening to stories with lots of events and characters, and use generic language instead of specific words (saying “the thing” instead of “the notebook”). Here, Dr. Richard will explain common language-processing challenges and provide suggestions for developing stronger skills and for facilitating improved processing at home and in school.

Richard, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an emeritus professor at Eastern Illinois University, specializing in childhood developmental language disorders, such as autistic spectrum disorders, language-processing, executive functions, and selective mutism. She has written 10 books and has given over 500 presentations sharing her practical clinical perspective. She is a fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and serves as president of that organization in 2017.
