It’s the question on every parent’s mind: “How can I help my child become a more engaged and effective student?” Many parents are weary after struggling for years to give their kids the tools they need for academic success. You offer useful suggestions that your son promptly rejects or your daughter tries for a week and then drops. Despite your best efforts, school remains a major source of tension and frustration for everyone.
Fostering your teen’s progress at school means sharpening his or her executive functions and creating interventions based on compassion, collaboration, and consistency. When you understand how the adolescent ADHD brain works —what it’s like living with learning challenges, and what motivates and discourages teens about school — you become your child’s ally, not his or her adversary.
