What actually works for families living with ADHD-related challenges?  Behavioral parent training (BPT), a well-studied and well-established first-line treatment plan for children with attention deficit disorder (ADHD or ADD) with results to match its expert pedigree.

Behavior therapy operates on a simple set of rules: Parents and other adults in a child’s life set clear behavior expectations. They praise and reward their child’s positive behavior — and discourage negative behavior through fair, immediate, and consistent consequences. In return, they get long-term improvements in their child’s behavior, communication, and problem-solving skills.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that doctors prescribe behavior therapy before medicine for preschoolers with ADHD. For older children, the AAP recommends using BPT alongside stimulant medication for the best results. The good news is that parents can begin honing their BPT skills at any time; it can effectively improve behavior through the teen years, and many ADDitude readers swear that it does.

As the director of ADHD Programs at Children’s Mercy-Kansas City, she oversees programs designed to improve the lives of children in the places it matters most: at home, at school, and with peers. She is involved in graduate medical education and an active researcher.
