    1. By the choices, I suspect these are paid placements. The best experts on ADD work in university child psychiatry departments and see patients there – not in mass-treatment clinics.

    1. Stimulants are the most-appropriate medication for adults with ADD. They are ‘schedule II’ by the DEA, which is the highest level of regulation for any prescribed medication. Many states do not allow physicians to prescribe schedule II medications without in-person visits. I suspect that will change over time. Another issue is that state regulators look at stimulants similar to how they look at other addictive substances. Doctors are required to assess for abuse and diversion of controlled substances by doing occasional ‘pill counts’ and in some cases, urine drug tests. It is frustrating that experts see a clear path from ADD to poor school performance to ODD and conduct disorder to substance use and antisocial personality disorders… and treatment of ADD has been demonstrated to improve recovery in adults seeking treatment for substance problems… yet regulators and many doctors have the approach that substance problems prohibit treatment of ADD with stimulants.
