From John Taylor’s clear explanation of what ADHD means and what it does not mean (like lazy or stupid) to the quizzes and progress charts that cap off most chapters, this book will help kids ages eight to 12 make each day a little better.

I know from personal experience that finding the right medication can take time. That’s why no young chidl with ADHD should miss the book’s “Signs That Tell You Medicine Is Working” (for example, “You’re more patient and not too eager for everything to happen fast”). Then, when your doctor asks how it’s working, you can say something more descriptive than, “Uhhh…OK, I guess.”

Chapter Five, “Life on the Home Front,” is full of wisdom. One particularly helpful suggestion: Replacing “It’s not my fault, I didn’t try to break the window” with “I’m sorry I broke the window.”

Life with my own family has gone much more smoothly since I learned to accept responsibility and to compromise. This book covers in one chapter what took me years to figure out. If you have ADHD, like yours truly, The Survival Guide is for you.
