Right Goal, Wrong Strategy — 11 New Treatment Ideas

"When treatment doesn't work, people admonish the patient. This suggests that the individual with ADHD didn't succeed because he has a fundamental flaw. But, the therapy is wrong, not the person." - William Dodson, M.D.

  1. This was such an insightful post! I really appreciated the point about how treatment failures are often blamed on the person rather than recognizing that the approach itself might be wrong. It’s a good reminder that ADHD brains work differently, and traditional methods often just don’t apply.

I’m curious—when you mentioned using competition or imagining a task as a video game, have you seen any particular strategies that work better for keeping long-term interest? ADHD minds are great at new challenges, but I wonder how people manage that inevitable drop in motivation once the novelty wears off. Would love to hear if you have any real-world examples of this in action!

  2. Dr. Dodson’s recent webcast from ADDitude is the absolute best webinar that I have seen. I asked my wife to listen and sent the link to my therapist, who in turn shared it with another of his patients. This slide presentation is a mini version of the webinar. I would like to see more on the body-doubling technique. I am an attorney, as well, but I don’t understand this technique. I can always find something to distract me from a case that is not interesting to me.
