My own 9yo daughter had trouble with written output. While her verbal skills and vocabulary were very high her physical writing was atrocious; poor penmanship, poor spelling & punctuation, and thought formation. Plus left-handed. It was a huge struggle for her to get all her be words on paper, with good letter formation and spacing, spelling, etc. We termed it Output Errors. The saving practice was to have her do all homework writing on keyboard. Her graphology is still almost as atrocious, but her idea production is top notch!
I was hopeful this had strategies for younger children. Disappointing this wasn’t even brushed over.
When my son was in Kindergarten, he would be so stressed he would push his pencil through the paper while writing or erase giant holes in his homework. I asked the teacher if we could switch to a marker since he loved to draw pictures and was comfortable with thin markers. The teacher agreed to give it a try. It was like night and day. He was less stressed, added lovely pictures to his work (esp. common core math problems) and was so productive. If he made a mistake, the teacher said it was fine to draw one line through the word and write the correct word above it.
When he was in 3rd grade, he had write sentences using 15 vocabulary words. It was awful to write 15 sentences every night, so I asked the teacher if he could use more than one word per sentence. The teacher was open to giving it a try. It then became a challenge to squeeze in as many vocabulary words as possible while still writing a logical sentence. He actually enjoyed the challenge. Once, he did it in 4 sentences!
