The FDA approval of generic versions of Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine dimesylate) capsules and chewable tablets will likely ease cost and accessibility barriers to prescription stimulants for ADHD.

Unfortunately, my insurance company is not passing along the cost savings with generic Vyvanse on to patients. I get Medicare through Aetna, which classfies Vyvanse and its generics as “nonpreferred drugs,” the highest copay tier. My copay for 30 day Vyvanse was $100. The new generic version copay, also $100! I guess they are going to just pocket the money they save! Who decides which drugs are “preferred”? Obviously not those of us who take the meds! Their only preferred ADHD drug is Ritalin. Take it or leave it! (End of rant 😉
Sounds like the generic is already available at my pharmacy in Western Washington. Also, sounds like the shortage has finally hit Vyvanse. Pharmacy says they don’t have enough Vyvanse to fill my prescription, but they have enough of the generic to fill my prescription.
How quickly might the generic be available in pharmacies? Is there a ballpark for how long distribution typically takes after approval?
