I have been homeschooling and unschooling since 2002 and it has been amazing. Thank you for writing such a positive and reassuring article concerning what is happening with education at this time and thoughtful ways to handle such and abrupt change. Kids are so resilient and will come through, what must be a bewildering time to them, just fine. If nothing else this is a great time to talk and think about how life has change and how it might change going forward. Spend time playing board games, video games or outdoor games together. This is truly an amazing time in history we are living through. How will kids remember it and what stories will they have to tell the younger generations one day?
Thank you so much for this timely article. My daughter has struggled a bit the last couple of years in school. She has begged me to allow her to do online schooling (she wants to avoid the mean girls and bs that goes on day to day). Now we find ourselves having no option but doing online and I am convinced she should be spending hours on her studies. She disagrees and tells me it should only take 2-3 hours of online work at home. I have since decided to quit pushing because I know that only causes more resistance. Now this article comes and it lets me realize that maybe she is on to something and maybe this is good for her. I will continue to let her control her learning and time spent and monitor, and if I don’t feel it is being effective, I will then require her more time learning the materials. Thank you for the article and the tips!
