The Ultimate ADD Accommodation: Ending the Systemic Oppression That Leaves Me Unbelieved, Untrusted, Unsupported

"Society distrusts my ability to state and pursue my own needs. This is rooted in the assumption that I, a Black femme with ADD, am deviant and lazy — an idea birthed from racism, patriarchy, ableism, and workism. The most important ADHD accommodation I can ask for, then, is for others to see me as a human."

  1. This essay is important in that it brings to issue how some people feel singled out due to their ADHD. However, the terminology of ‘workism’ ‘ableism’, ‘patriarchy’ are irrelevant and actually take away from the issue trying to be raised. While unfair treatment is bountiful toward people of all walks of life and among those with disabilities, and while it needs to be pointed out and addressed when it occurs, it also cannot become the focus of treatment. I feel we are moving into a dangerous place of abdicating personal responsibilities by blaming others when things don’t work out for us. I have ADHD, and have been discriminated against for my religion, my appearance and even my beliefs. I rise above it. I point out to others when they are being biased, and then I move on. I don’t believe anything is systemic right now in our society, except perhaps, victimization.
