“I strive to create a classroom environment where my students know they will be successful, no matter what. It’s the environment I would have felt safe in as a child; one that is encouraging, warm, and free of judgment or anger.”

Brittany, I really appreciated reading your article. You know, I’m 53 years old and just barely beginning my self-education about Nonverbal Learning Disorder. Basically it means that my own baffling struggles have explanations as well as strategies to help me rebuild my future.
I must admit, when I read your article I was taken by surprise when you switched to addressing your reader directly. Tears sprang up instantly. You see, when I reached university as a mature student, despite how deeply passionate I felt about pursuing Cognitive Science and what I dreamed of doing with my education, I found myself unable to get my mind to work or think as I desperately needed it to. That was the first time that I really understood myself as having an invisible disability. Since I couldn’t fathom what it was exactly, and since I had no accommodations, I had to walk away. At the time, I felt like I lost one of my favourite parts of being me.
So, you see, I simply had to thank you. Your story and your direct address felt like lightning to me. I only hope that I can project it effectively. What a tale that would be to tell!
