ADHD Self-Doubt, Shame & Gaslighting: My Anything-But-Perfect Storm

“Gaslighting is deeply personal and driven by reinforced shame, which the victim usually works to hide. It makes you question your core beliefs and cognitions, and thus it completely erodes your self-confidence, your judgements, your memories, and your motives. That confusion means you can be led astray as you look to others for help.”

  1. Is there anything for the partner of someone with ADHD who is being gaslit? My husband has ADHD and really does say some pretty mean, nasty, hurtful things when he’s done something pretty selfish or even harmful and gets called out for it. The problem is, if it’s a coworker, boss, or someone whose opinion can affect his job, he apologizes and doesn’t do it again. With me, however, when I tell him he’s done something hurtful, I suddenly get Mr. Hyde, name calling, accusations, called foul language, and sometimes worse. Then when I confront him about that, he denies he ever said it or did it and accused me of making it up! I was told by a marriage and personal counselor both that gaslighting people is a common ADHD trait as they literally don’t remember or seek to cover up their unacceptable behavior and language that is frankly abusive of their spouses. Yet all I see are articles claiming its ADHD people who are being gaslit and never addressing their own gaslighting behavior.

  2. Wow, this entry has really resonated with me so much. It is so very accurate and it something that has happened to me with many of my relationships. My recent ex wife used gaslighting to it’s full form and definition, so much so I suffered great mental health afflictions. She would always dismiss it minimise her wrongdoings and put great emphasis on any past wrongs I had committed. Don’t get me wrong, I was by far no Saint and I hold my hands up high to the things that I did wrong in the relationship and during our time navigating separation with two young children. I would endlessly try to impress her with personalised things such as certain gifts that really shown how much I understood about her likes and go above and beyond to try and get her to like me again.

Upon reflection, I was doing all this in vain as she was in the mindset of moving on and wanting me out if her life.

I vividly remember the ex wife telling me that when we moved closer to her family it would be easier to get rid of me and this often played on my mind. A few days later she’d be reassuring that it’s the fresh start that we need and if it didn’t work for us as a family, then we could always return to where we were before. 14 months after moving, and even though I had been stressing that I don’t feel we’ve made the best move, we had another argument about something small. Highly likely the result of living in a static caravan on her sister’s property, in very close confinement, the endless pandemic, myself stressing about the Masters I had just started a month prior, my wife being rather vacant from the relationship, and her unwillingness not to want to try therapy for our failing marriage; it ended abruptly and I was made to leave and was taken to a bedsit to start my journey as a separated father of two.

A lot has happened since this time and my mental health had evidently taken a big hit, after being cast aside by my one true love who I felt I would grow old with. I was absolutely devastated, and likely still am (see common ADD symptom of RSD), my life was turned upside down and inside out. I battled for months to impress her and still try my best for my kids with all that I had left to give. Anyway, fast forward to Xmas 2020,and by this point we had been separated about 8 weeks. I was invited to spend Xmas with my ex wife, the kids and her parents. I ensured that I got her a few meaningful things and ensured everything for the kids was sorted and in place for the big day. My son actually wrote a letter for Santa asking that his mammy and daddy got back together, this seriously broke my heart. During Christmas my ex wife would have her phone basically stuck to her, not even allowing the kids to play games on it or anything. I got one opportunity to look at her screen when it was set down to charge in the kitchen. Not intentionally looking to see if there was anything at all on it, in fact if it wasn’t for it lighting up with a new notification I would not have noticed it. I soon regretted looking at the screen when I seen that her ex boyfriend from 13 years ago and other males had messaged her. I couldn’t read the messages as I didn’t pry further, plus I didn’t want to hurt further; but my heart was physically hurting. It’s very difficult to explain this type of physical pain, which could be attributed to ADD, but it’d be likened to bad indigestion, a feeling of pain like someone’s punched your chest, your heart skipping a beat and that feeling you get when first go over the summit of a roller-coaster before you descend rapidly, or lick a humpback bridge in a car traveling at speed.

Anyway, all through this period and up to now al her energy has been concentrated on my wrongdoings and how it was all my fault, by bringing up things from any period in our 12 years together. Whenever we used to fall out, I’d always take the blame and apologise, ever when I know I wasn’t in the wrong. The type of thing as petty as me liking a female friend or work colleagues posts, talking to the wrong person or a person she felt she didn’t like, often for no reason. Recently for reasons of her own, and some help from my mental health wrongs, she’s stopped me talking to our song my children of 9 and 7.For months it has made me totally lost and really low, but finally I can look back and just accept the things I can’t change overnight and play the long game, to save my mental health and to stop any stupid impulsive actions. I’m still really grieving the loss of my marriage and not seeing it hearing from the kids. I feel if she even come to me tomorrow and apologised for her wrongs and I apologise for mine that I’d accept her back with the same love and respect that I’ve always had for her, regardless of what we’ve both put ourselves through. I’ll leave this post as it is for now, as I’ve rambled on a lot, but it has felt like a small release from all the pain I still hold inside.

  3. I could completely identify with this piece having been gaslit in a very destructive relationship involving a full sociopathic cycle of “ love bombing “ to the end stage rejection. I also lost the right person subsequently that I felt I could never trust to not abandon me . I could only take the relationship so far and she got tired of it and married someone else . I was widowed with children at a young age so the abandonment piece became reinforced . The resentment I have carried is toward myself . Twelve step work in aa helped me a lot with this fortunately but trust is always an issue .

  4. This article is so helpful to me. This gaslighting thing happens to me all the time. There was one person who was actually manipulating me, whilst doing this.

I notice that, if people do this to me, they might not realize it, AND, I’m very sensitive, so I usually take things upon myself. I take responsibility for everything, apologize for every little hiccup, and I have so little confidence that I gullibly believe anything people tell me.

My boyfriend gaslighted me yesterday. He interrupted me yesterday after saying 2 words because ‘he knew he didn’t care because the story was going to be super long.’ So, learning to step up for myself, I said ‘come on, I barely said two words’, after which he went on a defensive preach/rant about me. In my defense, I told him I sit listening to him for hours daily because I think it’s a total d*ck move to interrupt people just because you’re not interested.

Then he accused me of guilt tripping him, of manipulating him, for defending I listen to him as well. He thought I held it against him, when it’s only my focus to treat each other respectable and fairly. So I think it’s important to point out the other side of the story when he accuses me of things. I did become furious, and separated myself for a while. I came back saying that he shouldn’t think so low of me.

We didn’t talk about it anymore. I did app him, saying that it was stuck in my head, that he tinks so negative of me. That I wanna talk about it again, but I think, based on previous arguments that he’ll wave it away. Saying he doesn’t wanna deal with shit.

I love this guy, I’ve been with him for 7 years. These kind of arguments do make me wonder though, whether I’m better off without him.

  5. What a beautiful story. Despite your upsets you’ve been able to maintain a healthy heart. It’s clear to me through your writing. Thank you for sharing your story, Les!

I came to think of my own gaslighting story and how it has helped me be a better person. Which it seems like your story has done for you too. Is there anyway to follow you around social platforms?

    Hope you’re well!
