Dear ADDitude: Can the School Expel My Child for ADHD Behaviors?

"After expelling my child for poor behavior, his principal told me, 'This behavior was not related to his ADHD.' How do I determine if this is true? And how can I fight the school administration over his expulsion if a disability is, in fact, to blame?"

  1. But Private Schools CAN expel you for a disability – isn’t that true? My son, who has anxiety and senosory processing disorder, was expelled from 2nd grade because he was disruptive. He was never violent, never hit anyone, or threw anything. But he rolled around on the floor and would laugh a lot with his friends, making teaching challenging. The teachers would make him sit in the hallways, go to another classroom, or go to the principal’s office. His desk was set apart from the others. Despite being excluded and ostracized by his teacher, he had many friends and is now home, lonely and misses the social aspect. It’s infuriating that these private schools can cherry pick the “easy” kids and there are no laws to protect them.
