Adderall Shortage Persists as Opioid Settlement Triggers Pharmacy Constraints

The Adderall shortage is dragging on, in part, because of an opioid settlement agreement that restricts pharmacies’ ability to fill orders for controlled substances including ADHD stimulants and medications for anxiety.

  1. Xanax is not a schedule II substance, it is a schedule IV. It is also not common practice to prescribe a benzo with a stimulant. Yes, it happens, but should be the exception not the rule. There are other ways to treat GAD without using a benzo. I typically reserve benzo prescriptions for my patients who suffer from panic attacks or severe anxiety related to major trauma if regular daily medication isn’t completely working. Benzos are quick fixes, but not medications for long term use. If you are stuck on a benzo and nothing else for your anxiety, best to find a new provider….
