13 Questions to Ask When You’re Hiring a Coach

Important considerations every adult with ADHD should make when interviewing prospective coaches.

Coaching is an investment of time and money. Spend them wisely. Here are some basic questions to ask prospective ADHD coaches:

  • How long have you been an ADHD coach? Do you coach full-time or part-time?
  • Approximately how many people have you coached-and over what period of time? How many of your clients have had ADHD?
  • What kind of training do you have, and how extensive is it?
  • What are your areas of expertise (working with entrepreneurs, artists, parents, couples, men, or women; setting goals for relationships, career development, organization, or life transitions)?
  • What is your basic approach to coaching?
  • What will you expect from me during our coaching relationship (filling out forms, doing homework, submitting to evaluations, e-mailing or phoning you between sessions)?
  • How will you monitor my progress? What happens if I’m not making any?
  • Will you work, or confer, with my doctor, therapist, or spouse?
  • When are you available (days, evenings, weekends), and how will we meet (by telephone, in person, at the office or at home)?
  • Do you offer an introductory session, so that we can get to know one another?
  • How often, and for how long, will we meet? Is there an average length of time that you prefer to work with a client?
  • How much will this cost? (Most coaches require a month’s commitment, paid in advance, although some charge on a per-session basis.)
  • Do you accept checks or credit cards? What is your policy if I have to cancel an appointment?
