Large vs. Small Schools for Kids with ADHD
“My 7-year-old benefits academically from the nurturing environment at his small private school but doesn`t have any close friends. Should I switch him to a larger, public school?”
If your son’s learning needs clearly outweigh the friendship problems, look for an after-school activity or a sport that can broaden his circle. Before making a hasty decision, consider the saying “No matter where you go, there you are.” Your son will likely have the same difficulty making friends at a different school.
If you still think switching schools is the best option, ask the counselor at the potential new school what she can do to help your boy make a smooth transition. Depending on your son’s needs, ask about implementing an IEP or a 504 plan.
