Is Hypersensitivity Common in ADHD Kids?
“My daughter is sensitive to clothing tags, doesn’t like to wear socks, and wears gloves when she washes the dishes. A friend told me that this hypersensitivity is common in ADHD kids. What might be causing it?”
Some children with ADHD also have Sensory Integration Disorder (also referred to as Sensory Processing Disorder or Sensory Integration Dysfunction). This disorder may be manifested by fine motor and/or gross motor coordination problems, balance difficulties, and/or tactile sensitivity. Your daughter’s behaviors may be caused by tactile sensitivity. Have her evaluated by an occupational therapist.
