Hi Penny, nice to read your son is better now.Even my son is 6 years old but increase or decrease in methylphenidate just by 5 mg makes a lot of difference in his behaviour pattern. When the dose is changed whether your son tells you the changes he feel inside or in his thinking?Thank you.

HI Lynn, sharing my sons experience with you. When my son was on methylphenidate and abilify it gave us a good result, even in vacation he was extremely well managed with only abilify and without stimulant even for 21 days in stretch. Then as he is 6 years only ,i was little scared to give him both the medicines so i stopped abilify in tapering dose.FOR initial 3 weeks it was extreme aggression, violence and adamancy to do or not to do certain things just because he wants it was there,Even my husband suggested to restart abilify but i decided to wait, 3 weeks it was hell for a family.BUT after that i noticed these 2 major changes,
1)when he was on abilify plus stimulant there was irritability ,it has been reduced.Earlier i thought it comes naturally when stimulants are at the pick of action and he is expressive now.
2)his compulsive window shopping on portals then changing his mind, then again window shopping on portals has remarkably decreased.

now he is on only methylphenidate only but the same dose which was sufficient for him with abilify wass too low .HE needed increased dose with which he can thrive the whole day,so that dose we are trying nowadays. And other thing when he was on abilify in night, we were totally relaxed for the next day.but now we have to be very careful because when stimulant is wearing off his typical adhd behavior starts, before that other dose is required even in mild form.So it is all trial n error with lot of observation but it will help the child.

AND it all depends on child to child, how old is your grandchild?Other parents having experience of abilify and stimulant might have something different to say.I think first see independently which stimulant works for him then slowly add medicine for mood disorder.Good luck.

Recently I found this very helpful because time out doesnt help in my sons case he may actually bang the door or damage the things. If he becomes violent and one may think that he will not come easily to his nortmal self then we do some activity that he enjoys like ot ball massage, playing hide n seek etc,Initially he is reluctant but after i start he forgets about the outburst.sOMETIMES i hve to do it for 2 to 4 times a day.Hope this will help.

Thank you Penny. One thing I have noticed for these 15 days after stopping it;initially he was crazy and irrational. but now this week he is more stabilized. Most importantly, the behavioural side effects like compulsive shopping on potals has been tremendously decreased.I want everyone to be aware of this, because last 6 months I was thinking either it is ocd or some adhd related behavior which requires consistent stimulation, but was not knowing this is one of the rare side effect of aripiprazole. PREVIOUSLY my son would take 5MG of aripiprazole in night and for the next whole day he can thrive without any impulsivity or hyperactivity.ONLY during school time i used to give him methylphenidate 10 mg Xr once a day.NOW i give it twice a day.NOthing other than that. But once I was thinking Aripiprazole is like a magic to my kid.But by scaring of its side effect I stopped it and now i have doubt on this magic wand.

Another thing ,as a parent I joined the portal to get some tools and stratergies to help my kid, because in our country plan 504,IEP AND all oteher things are extremely rare and only superrich can afford.BUT many of the post I saw seem to be having negative messages and they shake hope for future with the support of medicine.Maybe they have their own experience. Can you or anyone share something positive and hopeful links or forum topics where people have successfully managed their adhd and life.Lastly extremely sorry if my opinion hurts anyone.

Thank you Penny for informative article, you have always been helpful since I have joined the portal. With all these pros and cons mentioned in the article, current medicines are working wonderfully for my son.My only concern is that as he is having adhd he must take medicines for it,but the other med which is prescribed for disorders like schizoprenia, bipolar or mood disorder will it besafe in long term for such a 6 year old kid?AS he is not diagnosed with these disorders.Or eventually he will grow out of that?DO you have any other link related to this?sure I will take second opinion as mentioned in the biog. Thanks again.

Dear RNFILL,actually I want to ask the same thing. My son aged 6 yrs had been given antidepressant as well as adhd medicine to stop is racing thoughts on the subject he is hyperfocused.99% it is vechicles and i found extremely good results.BUT as he is only six years and somewhere i read antidepressant shrunk the brain and dont give antidepressant and mood elevators to kids which are for bipolar or schizoprenia i gradually stopped it,before a week. Now he is consistently obesed with websites related to vechicles.HE wants us to purchase it on his birthday ,select some real vechicle and again after few minutes will come up and will find some reason for not liking the selected and do the same process again.AND if we shut down the laptop will be extremely aggressive. He doesnt want to go to his classes and if we send him his whole thought are about those websites and he hasnt cut those things from his mind.He just wants to come back and do the same thing again.

I am also in hudge dilemma, have I done something wrong by stopping his antidepressant due to scare though i got better results or this irrational behaviour will ultimately stop after some time.Or maybe this is because of methylphenidate.

Anyone please share your experience of taking antidepressant and adhd medicine.

just want to share this …when my son was 4 and half year he was diagnosed with adhd and was extremely unmanagable, now he is 6 and he is fairly managable ,is better in academics n socially as of today.Though traits of adhd are still there but with medicines he is okay.So when i was thinking everything will be better after puberty…I went through some posts quoting that their children around 16-18-20 are idle ,not ready to go to college or doing any work etc.I am totally confused and it really affects my positivity towards my sons future. As I was thinking with growing age he will be independant and will do something worth while.
Any ADHD parents whose children are in late twenties or early thirties can please share the experience??

@deb91 .He is not on spectrum but definately having some traits of autism.Little bit flexibility he shows but that to in term of cost of toy, type of toy or sometimes place from where to buy or if you assure him to travel by public transport or cab….So basically everything stops at the point of vechicles only. And that to immediately irrespective whether i am tired or busy. After buying or travelling he is happy n will not trouble me at all.But buying the the things immediately is extremely difficult. He is on Methylphenidate 5 mg twice a day.Whenever he is off the medicine his anxiety is less n he is very much flexible but he cant focus on study.Again while buying he is super explorer having very minute criterias.N IF I want to get the things done if he wants to buy a toy,he does those things or study but extremely anxious. He is extremely obsessed with the vechicles but with the stimulant i think there is extreme regidity and persuasion.

since my last post of 5th sept.my sons (6) obscession with toy vechicles has certainly increased. first he would select a vechicle at shopping portal, then after an hour or so he would think something is wrong in the vechicle giving excuses like design, speed, type etc, then again he would go on that portal and change the item from the cart.this was continuously for a week.then i suggested we would go to shop n select the vechicle, In a shop also he would explore for very long time then would suggest me other shop, like that we would go to 4 to 5 shops and finally after finding so many faults he would select a vechicle. He is extremely choosy and finds unreasonable and minute faults in almost all vechicles untill he settles for one. This thing is continuous till today.I have to bare all this because if i turned it down he would be violant, will start heating me,shouting n yelling n all the time peace and harmony of home would be at stake.plz advise if anyone has experienced sort of this and some tips how to manage it.ONCE HE GETS HIS VECHICLE,he is absolutely quiet n wellbehaved, but insists of keeping these vechicles in carry bag then clean it with some cloth and keep it in a position where it willbe clean n untouched. He plays very less with them ,its like a collection.Generally he forgets about these newly purchased vechicles within 2 days n then never wants to play with it.is it kind of ocd?

The same thing happens with me,whenever I am in home my son yells and cries consistently about some body discomfort and becomes very cranky….first i thought maybe because of stimulants or hunger or tiredness..but he is uncontrollable even after working on yhat….unless i send him to some classes…there he is ok….but again in home the same irritability and yelling is there, till i send him out to play.So these 3 days i arrange my household help to be with him and i purposely went out and now the feedback from her is that he was absolutely calm, not irritable and she thinks whenever i am there he acts out.
Another thing during his outburst he will find something which he is not comfortable with and shouts now he wants a toy car as compensation.Since last month he is demanding for a toy car..though i used to give cars to him ,now i have stopped. So yesterday night when he asked for a toy car when he was tremendously yelling when i intrrupted him while he was playing some mobile game and demanded a car as compensation of my intrrupting;out of frustrations i immediately agreed and suddenly he became composed ,active and enthusiastic . Again i am in doubt whether subconsciously am i giving him the reason that every time he yells and totally tries our patience and find some excuse he will be getting a car as compensation?

Same with my son he is so intrested in toy vechicles so whenever he talks,he draws,he colours that isabout vechicles only,In isupermarket n malls also he will go to toy vechicles section n will explore it for a long time without even looking at other things. Most of the time i find it so boaring.whenever someone asks which is his favourite colour he will ask which colour is faster,But i feel this is more of adhd than autism because he has set of friends n with them he interacts n participate in group games.besides these he has this fixed sort of topic of intrests like kidnapper story, his friends,sheep.90 percent he will talk, ask, see the videos about them only,

But I forgot to type one thing in my earlier post, this kind crankiness and rigidity for demandind certain things increses when he is tired and hungry or he badly wants to buy a toy vechicle which we refuge to buy…Because by now it has become his habbit.so if u give him the food and send himout to play with his friends in such tensed situation then everything is okay after five minutes.is is related to food n tiredness?if there are any suggestions for any particular food?
