You don’t say where you are located.
It took me a couple of tries before I found a mental health clinic that could help me. I’m in far northern NYS, like Montreal PQ is two hours drive from where I live. The closest ADHD specialists listed here are in Albany NY, 2 hours and 30 minutes drive from me. There’s NOTHING listed in Burlington VT! (Where I would normally go for specialist care)
I didn’t find help thru ADDitude, I just started calling local mental health clinics until I started having an e-mail interaction with an intake person who understood what I was trying to do. First I was told about a local psychiatrist but during my intake with them they explained that they do not prescribe ANY controlled substances. Ummmmm how can I trust a psychiatrist who knows so little about ADHD that they are trying to treat it with only second and third line options? I know it’s a pain in the touchas to be able to write scripts for controlled substances…but just say you don’t do ADHD!
Find the mental health practitioners in your area and start calling around. It’s going to take some time and you will need patience and perseverance. I started with asking about “Medications and support groups for adults with ADHD.” I still haven’t found a support group. Therapy is meh…I understand what I should be doing apart from meds…actually doing it is another matter…but now I have an attention span and that helps a lot.
You may well need to find a different primary care doctor but sometimes that’s easier said than done. I didn’t have “a doctor” for years!
