Drug Tests and ADHD Medications
I was randomly drug-tested at my workplace, and I tested positive, because I take ADHD meds. I don’t want to disclose my condition to my boss, nor do I want him to think that I have a drug problem. What should I do?
You may be forced to disclose your diagnosis and medication plan, to keep your job. Upon notice, your employer cannot discriminate against you because of your disability or the medication you take to manage symptoms. However, telling your employer about your attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a complex decision that you should not make impulsively. Not everyone is accepting or knowledgeable about ADHD. Some employers may discriminate by passing the employee over for a promotion, and others may treat him unfairly.
Instead of making a formal disclosure, perhaps you should have your doctor provide limited documentation to the employer, indicating that he has prescribed medication that is managing your condition, while keeping your diagnosis confidential. This should be sufficient to explain your drug test results.
