Study Explains Role of Dopamine in Impulsive Behavior

Increased levels of dopamine in the brain may make individuals more likely to act on an impulse, rather than wait for what potentially could be a more beneficial outcome, according to a new study led by professor Ray Dolan, of London’s Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging. As attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by increased dopamine levels, the findings of Dolan’s team, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, may help explain why ADDers are more prone to impulsive behaviors. Meds Used to Treat Insomnia and Depressions May Be Linked to Long-Term Cognitive Impairment

A study of African American males over the age of 70 found that some medications routinely used for conditions like insomnia and depression, as well as allergies and incontinence, might lead to long-term cognitive impairment. These drugs called anticholinergics, block acetylcholine, a nervous system neurotransmitter, and are widely used in over-the-counter medications.
