Can I Treat My Son’s Auditory Processing Disorder Naturally?
“Auditory processing disorder (APD) is often diagnosed alongside ADHD. Are there any natural treatments used to help children manage this condition?”
It is important to make sure that the APD diagnosis is correct. A true auditory processing disorder is a neurological problem that must be diagnosed by an audiologist. Many children have difficulty listening or attending to verbal information as a result of ADHD or other conditions, without having APD.
If it turns out that your son does have the condition, medication will not help. Treatments may include modifying the learning environment to reduce or eliminate certain sounds, teaching children skills to compensate for the disorder, and working with an audiologist to improve the auditory deficit itself. To learn more about this complex disorder, I recommend this discussion on the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s site: asha.org.
