Why I Tell People About My Child’s ADHD
Letting people know about your child’s ADHD gives them time to prepare and better handle his symptoms.
I’ve learned that it is always better to tell people about my son’s ADHD. I do not announce it to the world, but telling new teachers, caregivers, or his friends’ parents allows them to be prepared and better able to handle his symptoms. I have yet to find anyone who wasn’t receptive.
On the other hand, when I haven’t told people until after an incident — like the time he went to a new friend’s house and ended up hitting the girl — it seems like I’m using ADHD as an excuse for bad behavior.
