The more you can adjust your schedule to accommodate your child’s needs, says pediatrician James Lewis, the more you can avoid chaotic mealtimes and increase your child’s chances of getting enough calories and nutrition. Here are some rules to live — and eat — by:

  • Awaken early to prepare breakfast before your child gets up.
  • Prepare mini-meals and snacks in advance for the rest of the day.
  • Store plenty of quick-to-fix and ready-to-eat foods in your refrigerator, freezer, and cupboards.
  • Substitute a snack for a traditional meal when your child seems uninterested in eating what you’ve cooked.
  • Know your child’s food preferences and stock his favorite items.
