Problem-Solving Tips for Parents

A three-step plan for resolving difficulties with your child.

As parents, we work hard to smooth our children’s paths. While occasional problems are inevitable, you and your child should find them easier to handle with this three-step plan.

1. Identify the specific problem.

2. Brainstorm possible solutions, and keep a written list.

3. Try one of your solutions. If it doesn’t work as you’d hoped, go back to your list and pick another approach to try.

For a young child who benefits from visual reinforcement, create a poster with words or pictures to remind her to work through each step. Be sure to hang it in a prominent place.

    have you heard of this?
Have you heard of encopresis? My son was still pooping his pants in 1st grade (I know not as bad as your son's issue) and I found out about encopresis. We treated him for it (diet, stool softeners, etc.) and he quit doing it!! Just a thought. Google it. (I know you say 'wetting pants' but there is a lot of liquid associated with encopresis that you might think is pee.)

    clean pants chart
I share your frustration with this issue. Ask your pediatrician about meds being part of the problem. My son and I are working together on a "clean pants chart" with which he can choose a prize every 3 "clean pants" days. Nothing big, just a small prize, even something like staying up later on the weekend, picking out the family movie night dvd, something like that. I also involve him in cleaning his dirty clothes (rinsing them out and taking them out to the laundry room) and cleaning himself up, and I know it's difficult, but I try to be just very matter of fact and business-like about it. Hang in there-- It does get better! Please remember that this is not a character issue; your son will get over it!
