1. Get everything in writing. For meetings, lectures, or workshops that require close attention, ask for an advance copy of the meeting agenda, lecture outline, and so on. They will help you be an active listener and take better notes during the meeting.
2. Snag a good seat. Ask to move your desk somewhere out of the way from noisy fans or doorways. During a meeting or workshop, make sure to face the speaker and, if possible, take occasional breaks.
3. Ask for a review. After a meeting, ask your co-worker or supervisor for a brief review of the main points to fill in details you might have missed when your focus flagged. Find out exactly what is expected of you next—succeeding steps on a project, and so on. Don’t forget to confirm deadlines.
4. Avoid fatigue. Whenever possible, pick a time for meetings that works well for you. Get plenty of rest the night before an important meeting, and have a snack right before it to help you stay focused and calm.
5. Move! As long as you don’t disturb others, clicking a pen, playing with your hair, knitting, and so on can help you stay focused. If discretion is an issue, chewing gum, sucking on hard candy, or even sipping from a glass of water might do the trick.
6. Work closely with your boss. Scheduling frequent, short meetings with your your manager or supervisor and asking him or her to provide deadlines in writing will help keep you on track.
