Tough Morning Routine

"My teenage son has a hard time waking up each morning. Could this be caused by ADHD or his stimulant medication?"

by Larry Silver, M.D.

Some teens stay up late, playing computer games or chatting via the Internet with friends, making it hard to wake up the next morning. Others use the difficulty in getting up as an excuse to avoid going to school. Monitor your son's behavior, then develop a plan based on what you find. If he's using the computer at night, move it out of his bedroom.

If you think a dose of medication late in the day is interfering with his sleep, discontinue that dose. If these measures don't help, consult a mental health professional.
