"What ADHD medication can be used with Tegretal and Depakote?"
Larry Silver, M.D.
Depakote and Tegretal are primarily used to treat bipolar disorder. I suspect this is the reason your child or adolescent is on it. About 50 percent of youth with bipolar also have ADHD. When this is true, the Ritalin/Dexedrine/Adderall group works best. Often it is necessary to treat the bipolar problem first and then the ADHD. If one starts with Ritalin, the bipolar might be exacerbated. This may be why Ritalin caused hyperactivity originally.
