Finally Ready to Get Help

Q:

"My 19-year-old has finally agreed to see a doctor after years of battling depression and using marijuana. How can I find the best doctor in my area?"

Dr. Larry Silver specializes in treating children with attention deficit disorder (ADHD).
A:

Before you seek the "best," you have to decide what specialty you want the doctor to be best in: ADHD? Substance abuse? Depression? Instead of "doctor shopping," I urge you to consult a child and adolescent psychiatrist as soon as possible. This professional can assess all of your son's problems. Your family doctor should be able to refer you to a good psychiatrist. If not, contact the division of child and adolescent psychiatry at a nearby medical school.

Larry Silver, M.D., is the author of Dr. Larry Silver's Advice to Parents on AD/HD and The Misunderstood Child: Understanding and Coping with Your Child's Learning Disabilities. He is also a clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

    Long Term Effects UnKnown
I've been taking adderall for the past 6 years at 30mg/day non-time release. Over the past 4 months I have increased the dose to on average 100mg per day with maybe one week out of the month off of the drug. That said, I'm experiencing hair loss in the crown of my head. It's pretty bad. Hair loss does not run in the fam at all plus im a late bloomer. Im 25 but look 20 tops. So, there's no way it's anything but the adderall. I can feel my skin dry out, scalp start to itch and eyes get bloodshot when I take it now. Anyways, every doctor (including my personal doctor)that I've talked to always tellme it must be stress or something because hair loss is not a side effect of Adderall. Sometimes, I feel like they're getting paid to say these things as well as post replies to people's inquires on the web. There's no "expert" on the web ACTIVELY speaking out about this dumb drug only "experts" taking up for the drug. ive experienced every side effect on the books plus a ton more that aren't listed anywhere. IVe been doing online searches for these side effects for a few months now and ive notived more and more new postings popping up every day. A month or so ago Yahoo Answers had the only article discussing a link between Hair loss and adderall, now there are at least 50 or so. I have all kind of weird side effects from this drug and im pissed. Im starting a f****** revolution (web series or something). Many obvious side effects of this drug that are not listed in the book are being overlooked and it's retarded...im starting the weird adderall side effect club manana. Keep an eye out
