Tough Morning Routine

Q:

"My teenage son has an extremely hard time waking up each morning. Could this be caused by ADHD or his stimulant medication?"

Dr. Larry Silver specializes in treating children with attention deficit disorder (ADHD).
A:

Some teens stay up late, playing computer games or chatting via the Internet with friends, making it hard to wake up the next morning. Others use the difficulty in getting up as an excuse to avoid going to school. Monitor your son's behavior, then develop a plan based on what you find. If he's using the computer at night, move it out of his bedroom.

If you think a dose of medication late in the day is interfering with his sleep, discontinue that dose. If these measures don't help, consult a mental health professional.

Larry Silver, M.D., is the author of Dr. Larry Silver's Advice to Parents on AD/HD and The Misunderstood Child: Understanding and Coping with Your Child's Learning Disabilities. He is also a clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

    There's more to it!
As an adult with ADD, I would like to offer an 'insider' persective. ADDers can take a LONG time to get mobile in the morning; our brains come alive -- and process -- at a s~l~o~w rate. I get up at 5:40 am, in order to leave for work at 8:20 am. The following is what gets me going: 1) a huge helping of protein (fish for breakfast, or egg whites in my porridge) 2) taking my stimulant med an hour before leaving (if taken earlier, it wears off too soon) 3) a few minutes on the exercise bike Another note about processing speed: when doing my undergrad degree, I did only moderately well, because it included timed tests. My Masters degree, however, was based entirely on coursework, and I got straight A's. Hope this helps. PMHLB Ottawa, Canada
