Growing Out of ADHD

Q:

"My 15-year-old has been fine without medication for the past two months. Is it possible that he has outgrown AD/HD?"

Dr. Larry Silver specializes in treating children with attention deficit disorder (ADHD).
A:

Although the reasons are unclear, some adolescents do seem to outgrow the need for medication. I suggest keeping him off, but monitor him closely as the school year progresses. If symptoms return, he should restart medication. His doctor can determine whether a lower dose may be sufficient.

    re: growing out of ADHD
I was diagnosed with ADD as a 6 year old. I took meds until I was 11. When the doctors took me off it was because of the side-effects I was experiencing. So they gradually decreased the dosage. I eventually learned to control my ADD on my own. I had to stick to routines and organization. I also had to be sure I had a quiet place to study. I am now 24, a college grad and have not taken medication since the age of 11. Although I still have certain feelings and have trouble paying attention I have learned how to control my ADD without medication. If your son feels fine and can control his ADD he might be like me. However, I believe that everyone is different. I just felt like I should share my experience.
