The Six Types of ADHD?

Q:

"What do you know about Dr. Daniel Amen's brain imaging to diagnose six distinctive brain dysfunctions in order to determine how to treat them?"

A:

Dr. Amen has reported what you state. As best I know the literature, no research has been able to confirm his theory, findings, or recommendations. My personal suggestion is that you not spend time or energy seeking this approach to diagnosis or treatment.

Larry Silver, M.D., is the author of Dr. Larry Silver's Advice to Parents on AD/HD and The Misunderstood Child: Understanding and Coping with Your Child's Learning Disabilities. He is also a clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

    Six Types of ADHD?
I have read the book by Dr. Amen and although it is interesting and provocative, there are other possible explanations or interpretations so it is important to keep in mind that his conclusions are based on his theory, not established scientific research. Several of the types mentioned bear remarkable resemblance to ADHD along with another comorbid psychiatric disorder. Overfocused ADHD, whose criteria match my daughter very well, sounds like ADHD with comorbid anxiety. That also happens to be my daughter's official diagnosis. The "Ring of Fire" type sounds like a bipolar or cyclothymic spectrum disorder, the "Limbic" type could be comorbid dysthymia or depression and the "Temporal Lobe" type has a lot of symptoms that are in common with someone diagnosed with a high-functioning, "acting out" type of borderline personality disorder. My husband would fit the description of Classic ADD, Limbic, and Temporal Lobe Types listed in his book. His official diagnoses are ADHD, Depression and Borderline Personality Disorder.
