Ask the ADD Medical Expert:
Larry Silver, M.D.
Vitamins for Hyperactive Kids
Q:
"I am 29 years old and I have a hyperactive five-year-old son. Will "Stress Tabs," or other supplements containing "B" vitamins, have a calming effect for children, and are they safe?"
A:
The broader question you are asking is, "Does my child have ADHD?" The next question you ask is, "If he does, how is ADHD treated?" Try to get these questions answered by your family physician or a child or adolescent psychiatrist.
You would never go to your physician and say that your child is sick but you will not allow him to go on an antibiotic if he has a bacterial infection. You should not go to your physician and say your child might have a neurochemical disorder called ADHD but you will not allow him to go on a medication that treats this disorder.
Perhaps you should read a book or two on ADHD - what it is, how it is diagnosed, how it is treated. Concerning your specific question on vitamin B, discuss this with your child's family doctor.

vitamin treatment
Does any one know of any vitamin(s) that would help with ADHD/ADD? My daughter has been on Adderall for the past three years and I really didn't want to do it, but it was to the point to where the school was calling me daily nonstop and threatening to suspend her for her behavior. She's not a trouble maker or a bad kid, she's just very active and apparently the teacher could not handle it. So the Principal and Teacher recommended that I take her to the Pediatrician and of course within a week later, she was prescribed Adderall XR. Yes, she did improve at school with keeping still and being able to focus more, but she wouldn't eat. I would literally have to make her eat and at the time she was only 5. She's now 8 years old and I am terribly afraid that she won't "grow out of it" so what I've been told. I really don't want her taking medication anymore. The newest medication that she was prescribed is Vyvanse. It's okay. She does eat more with that medication. I have decided that I no longer want her taking medication. It may be selfish of me, but I don't want my daughter to have to continue knowing that she has to take medications because of her behaviors. Does anyone know of any vitamins that may help out?

vitamin treatment
Dr silver. You yourself could learn something new if you "read a book or two" on ADHD treatments other than RX drugs. There have been double blind studies done on the use of vitamins to reduce the symptoms of ADHD. Please dont be so quick to put all these kids on drugs needlessly.

Vitamin treatment
Dr Silver, I apologize if I offend you, but I really believe you could have better answered the question that the 29 year old posed. Let me re-phrase it:
What is your opinion of vitamin supplements in treating ADD? I have personally noticed success in using B vitamins and large amounts of Niacinimide. What do you think?
Thank you.
