I don't feel like the school wants to help

My son was diagnosed with ADD in Dec. 2011. Once he was put on meds he excelled. But now they want to hold him back because of his reading. This is the same thing I went through with my daughter so I asked could he be tested and put on an IEP. They have told me that he would not qualify for it. I Really do not want to hold him back because I think that it would hurt his self esteem. I know that with more intensive help he would be fine. But I have no idea what to do....Am I wrong for feeling this way?

They're wrong

They are wrong for telling you, off the bat, that he wouldn't qualify for it. You have the right to refer your child for testing, and they then need to make it happen. If your son turns out to have a specific learning disability besides ADHD, he'd probably get an IEP. For some reason, kids with ADHD alone don't usually qualify for an IEP, except sometimes under the category "Other Health Impaired" if it is particularly severe. However, if he only has ADHD, he might qualify for a 504 plan, which would grant him accomodations, but wouldn't require him to have individual goals and everything that IEPs have. Either way, if you asked for the testing, they need to step up and provide it!
