how to get your child motivated?

My son is 8 years old. He was diagnosed with ADHD last year. We've tried Focalin and Vyvanse, and none of them seem to do anything for him. He does not have trouble with academics. He is very bright, but he needs to "put effort" into his work, as his teachers say. My husband decided that he didn't want to put him on medication and feels it's not necessary. I don't agree with this, but he has consulted our doctor about this. The doctor says it is our choice, but I don't know if this is right. My son has maybe 1 friend, and can not hold a conversation with anyone. He has no social skills and we've tried social skills classes. Nothing works. Then we end up just quitting everything. He used to be in sports early on, but was always afraid of getting hurt or was too shy to participate. I don't know what to do. It is hard to get him to do anything besides play video games all weekend long. I want to help him find something that he loves, but he does not enjoy anything. He says he is not sad, but I don't understand how he can be happy doing nothing. I just wanted to get this off my chest. Don't know what to do anymore.
