Tenex/Intuniv
Hi--my son has been taking Intuniv, which is an extended release packaging of guanfacine, the same drug that's in Tenex, for about a year and a half. We started him on 1 mg, then went up to 2, and have been at 3 for a year. It took him a good month, at least, to adjust to each dose. When he first started on the 3 mg, he fell asleep every time he sat still for more than a couple minutes, no matter where he was. He was emotional, too--I think his system was just overwhelmed. Stimulant meds gave him tics and made him agressive/angry/anxious/depressed--not an option!!!
Even now, after a year, if his sleep schedule is off for more than a night or so, or if he's overstimulated because of excitement (like around a holiday) or nervousness (like when school started), or if he's about to hit a growth spurt, the hyperactivity/exhaustion merry go round can be dizzying. He'll come home from school, fall asleep on the couch (and NO amount of effort could either keep him awake or wake him up once he's asleep), then get up and be crazy, then crash as soon as his head hits the pillow. But life on Intuniv is 1000x better than life off Intuniv.
You know your kid best--if you think it's too much for him, talk to his doctor. But unfortunately, for so many ADHDers, it's a question of finding what offers the largest portion of good--nothing is going to make everything better...Good luck!
