16 year old son smoking pot and failing in school.....Please assist

My 16 year old son has ADD and takes Concerta. He's bee on medication since 2nd grade. The past two years he's been failing certain classes in school. I've worked with these teachers almost on a daily basis to help him succeed in those classes. The problem is that he doesn't like school. At the beginning of the school year he starting having panic attacks and missed alot of school. He didn't make up any of his work, his grades starting falling and he just won't do homework and/or won't turn it in. He really is an A/B student. Anyway, he failed two classes. A few weeks ago I got so tired of the whole thing and sent his guidance counselor an email asking if he's too young to drop out and get his GED. She said that there is a new community school within his old high school that is 4 hours a day which the kids work on a computer and have two classes online a month. They work at their own pace. I guess it is like credit recovery school. He is going to start that next week. In the meantime, I caught him outside the back door smoking out of a pipe at 8:00 one Saturday morning. We had a discussion with him about how he shouldn't be doing this, it's illegal, blah, blah, blah. He said he would stop. Well, the past couple of days when he's getting ready for school, he'll come into the kitchen, take is pills, eat something, go back into his room, lock the door, then I hear him start coughing, the door unlock and he's out the door to school. We know he's smoking in his room because he's got a bottle of Visine on his dresser, my Hubby can smell smoke (pot) and it's cold in there like he's opened the window, and the windows are usually locked. Anyway, I need advise of what to do with this whole school issue and especially the pot issue. Any ideas, suggestions, Thanks, Kath17

16 year old...

I think the first thing I would do is try to evaluate how his Concerta is working for him. How does he feel it is working? When was the dosage adjusted last? Why does he feel he needs the pot? Does it relieve anxiety for him? Maybe he needs to be put on an anxiety medication? Anxiety seems to go hand-in-hand with ADHD. Maybe he needs to be switched to a different medication? If he's been on the same meds since 2nd grade, he may have built up a tolerance to it. If you have seen a therapist in the past, I would definitely make an appointment to go back and talk it through together. I always told my son that seeing a therapist wasn't just for him, but for ALL of us to better understand and help each other. The challenge you are facing with him is that he is starting to make more of his own choices, but with those choices come the consequences. It is hard to not worry about that cute littel face that flashes through your mind ('cause he's always going to be your litle boy!), but if you approach it in a way that says "These are the choices you are making. Are you happy with the way things are? Probably ot because people who self-medicate are trying to fix something. What do you want to do to make things better? How can I help you?" Most of all, you know your son better than anyone in the world. There came a time that I had to change the way I handled situations and emotions with my son. When you don't respond the way they expect, they tend to pay more attention when you try to get your point across. Good luck!
