CPA Exam Studying and ADHD

Background: I am 34 years old and was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 16. I have been on medication since I was diagnosed. College was rough, but I finally finished and got a B.A. in Psychology. I also now have a Masters in Accounting, and this time around, I did very well.

My problem: I have already taken the CPA exam and failed all 4 sections. After a year and a half of doing basically nothing, I've decided to attempt the CPA exam again, despite serious testing anxiety and low confidence as far as passing the exam is concerned.

Question: I'm wondering if anyone with ADHD has successfully passed the CPA exam recently, and if so, can you please give me some pointers on how to study for this exam? Clearly, the way I did it before didn't work at all, and now that I'm committed to passing this exam, I could really use some advice. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You can pass....it's possible

I am a self-prescribed ADDer (haven't found time to go to the doctor yet, been putting it off for years). I just recently passed the FAR section of the exam with a score of 80 (not the best but good enough to pass). I'm currently studying for the AUD and REG section for the next testing window. I'm not sure I would have the best advice to help with your studying as we all study differently. For me I found that reading the books did nothing for retention. I took the BISK Education online review course and I think it is the only thing that helped me stay on track. I had a plan to test in Oct/Nov, however, I procrastinated so much that I had to ask for an extension of the online course to carry me into the next testing window. Right now (yes as I am typing to you) I am studying, book open, audio CD in my computer and highlighter in hand.... with my study schedule literally staring me in the face....yet here I am typing my reply to you. (Is that ADD??) What worked for me is watching the videos provided as part of the course, taking the practice questions and only taking notes on the questions that I missed. Study those notes then take the practice questions again until you've internalized as much as you can. Don't worry about mastering one chapter before moving onto the next. Take your notes and move on to the next chapter/topic, then come back to that topic after a couple of days and retake the question sets. That was for FAR. For AUD I'm struggling because this is a lot of reading and I'm finding it harder to focus. Not sure if any of that helps but it is possible for someone with ADD/ADHD to pass. Not easy....but possible. You can do it!

Dont think of it as an exam

Like you, I have test anxiety. I attended Duke Divinity School, and it took me longer to complete my MDiv, due to test anxiety. Then a fellow pastor suggested, "STOP THINKING TEST." Instead, look at it as a client, and go with it. Also, because ADD is listed with the ADA act. You can be given more time to take the test. Thereby, helping the idea, its not a test, but rather a client you are working with or for. I hope this helps.
