Still struggling........three years in a row with son's middle school...Help!!!
My son is in the 8th grade and we have struggled all the years he has been in that building. He was diagnosed as ADHD and ODD. He was evaluated for special ed which they found ineligible even though he scored in the >1% in math for his age. He continues to struggle during they day and in the classroom setting. And more so in classes that are not structured and contain a lot of movement into groups and activity....ie, math and language arts. Psycho testing by his school and the independent evaluation we had, both point to visual spatial significant issues and the independent evaluation actually stated he requires specialized instruction....based on the visual spatial, adhd and the below grade level -3rd grade - in math, but the school says its alk behavior and pretty much ignored the results when we had the meeting to review and in fact I felt like we were attacked and that they were even offended that they had to review the results. It was me against 9 staff members who, you could tell had discussed who would speak and what would be said because the independent showed the same results as their eval, however they refused to identify. After that meeting, I filed a complaint with our state bd of ed and only after that complaint did they do the 504. Nearly a year after the evaluate and the adhd but his struggles in math are getting worse and the teacher id bullying him saying thinks like "you need to pay attention" or "your brain is smarter than the effort you put forth" ! To which my son responded in an agitated voice, "you don't understand how my brain works". I was proud of my son.....he is tired of everyone in that body telling him that he is avoiding or making excuses. I as his parent KNOW they are not excuses and that he is trying his best!!!!...... But seriously......Does the math teacher not understand ADHD at all??!!! And let me tell you-absolutely not based on the conversation today. He refused to listen to me and just kept saying my son is not motivated......no kidding!!!!! And what are you doing about it? What are you doing to help bridge the 3rd gr math level coupled with the adhd in the classroom? He could not tell me. I threw out the adhd and he ignored me. .....and just kept saying how he is not motivated. The I told him to ask his other teachers to which he rellied that i do not need to tell him who to talk to or how to teach. How would you deal with your child's school in a situation like this??
and kept saying over and over
theindependent ese reviewed.
