Focalin xr

My 16 year old son has been taking 10mg Focalin xr to help with his inattentiveness and focus. He was not seeing good results and his doctor upped his dose to 20 mg. Yesterday he took the new dose for the first time at 7:00 am. By 9:45 he said he felt terrible. He was exhausted and his arms/legs felt achy. When he got home from school he said he felt better but was still tired. I am curious if perhaps he felt like he did because the dose is too high? How do you know if the dose is too high? (He had been taking 36 mg. of Concerta. Focus was good but the crash left him very angry)
