New to Adderall and experiencing horrible irritability

I am a 23 year old female. I have not been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, however I have trouble getting to sleep, trouble concentrating as well as falling asleep during the day uncontrollably. My doctor put me on Vyvanse for a month and that seemed like an immense caffeine rush which I didn't like whatsoever. He prescribed me Adderall, I'm assuming the regular kind because it doesn't specify IR or XR at 10MG twice per day. The first time I took it, I got extremely irritated with anything and everything that was going on. I thought it may have been just something to do with the first dose of the medicine. So I took another dose, and it made me slightly less irritable but very sleepy. I took it yesterday with great results, I could concentrate and I was alert but I still felt sleepy. I took a higher dose of 20MG today and then another 10MG around 6 hours later. I have in the last little bit gotten so irritable that it is scaring me. I have always had a short temper, but never anything like this. I am wondering if I am taking too high of a dose, if there's a supplement that I could take, am I drinking too much caffeine, or if I should just try another medication for the daytime sleepiness. I have scheduled a doctor's appointment but I would like to get some feedback from actual users instead of someone who just knows what "clinical studies" have shown. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Brittany

Caffeine and Adderall is a no go.

I had to stop all caffeine in order to be successful with Adderall. I would get irritable towards coworkers and students. I would suggest that you eat plenty of lean protein and steer clear of sugar and caffeine. Just my two cents.

Update/Reply

I have kept taking it but limited it to only early in the day to lunch time taking it and this has helped a little with my irritability. The irritability subsides when I take it daily, but like December 26 and 27 I didn't take them because of all the stress from Christmas, I was trying to relax. While there wasn't any withdrawals or anything, however the next day that I took it, I once again got irritable. I'm not sure whether it's normal. I've read that I do need to take days off from taking it daily. However, I feel uncomfortable getting irritable after only a couple of days absence especially since I haven't been taking this medication very long and that I have been taking a very low dose. I do try to limit my caffeine but it I seem to get a little more tired that way even while at the peak of the medication. Thanks for the reply. I do appreciate any input. Brittany

I had the same problem..

Hi, I just read your thread, and I used to take adderall, and I suffered from the same thing- and it gradually got worse.. I got really irritable especially when the medication was starting to wear off. My irritability gradually got to the point to where nobody wanted to be around me- not even my husband and children! Then, after awhile, I started getting extremely paranoid to the point that I felt as if everyone was out to get me, and everything that was said to me or about me was somehow negative in some way. I felt like I was in a war zone! O.0 I didn't want to stop taking the medication, because without it, I couldn't get anything done at all, and didn't even have the motivation to even get out of bed.. Finally, I quit taking it cold turkey, and it took 4 weeks to get out of my system to where I didn't feel like I was going insane! I talked to my doctor about it, and he suggested that I try Daytrana. I've been on it for about 2 weeks now, and I can honestly say that it is way better for me than Adderall, but he may not have me on a high enough dose of it just yet because the effects are mild, and don't last me throughout the day. I don't have the "crash" with Daytrana that I did with Adderall, I'm definately not paranoid, and I'm not irritable at all... If anything, I feel like it actually helps me with my irritablity. Medications work different on everyone, but this may be an option that you may want to speak with your doctor about before your symptoms get any worse. Good Luck!

Try another medication

My son hated the way Adderall made him feel. He didn't even want to take it after a while. He said "he didn't like the way it made him feel". He had trouble eating and sleeping. We didn't waste a lot of time on this medication. We asked the Dr. to prescribe something different. He suggested Vyvanse. My son has a normal appetite and sleeps well. He says he feels "normal" and his personality is happy, outgoing, and funny. He makes good grades in school and is usually well-behaved. This is the only medication we have had success with. We tried Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, and Stratera. None of them were working for us.

Sounds like your doctor messed up

When I started on the adderall, my doctor had me work up from 10 mg daily to 20 mg over a 3 or 4 week period. Sounds like he is starting you on too much too soon.

Linden Method Review

There are so many things around us that made us feel anxious such as relationship, money, exam, terror boss, job interview and death of a family member. Quite simply, anxiety is just around us. No one could tell when it will happen or where it will happen. It could happen anytime anywhere. But of course there's a way to overcome anxiety.

Try vitamins

I had that issue when I first started Adderall and somone suggested supplementing with Vitamin Bs, D and Folic acid. I picked me up a mega-multivitamin and it helped greatly.

The Right Medicine

I think one of the biggest keys in this journey is finding the right medicine and dose. What you are experiencing on Adderall, I experienced on Vyvanse. Adderall has been a wonder drug for me. There is fine line with me on dosage with Adderall but my doctor and I have figured out. If you are feeling uncomfortable with the side effects, I would stay in close contact with your doctor so you can both track the dosage changes and side effects. And don't be afraid to try a different med. Adderall was the 5th one I tried.
