Not the "standard" student...check out this book!
I am now 40 years old and struggles in school. I have ADHD and can't memorize for anything and the more I try the worse it gets. I hated tests because I couldn't memorize. My best class was PE!
I am currently reading a book called, Time for Action, Stop Teaching to the Test and Start Teaching Skills. Author, Scott D. Wurdinger. This book talks about how so many kids are not the "standard student". The No Child Left Behind has taken education to a place that is no loger really teaching students but making them memorize information and get tested on it. Schools have to meet Adequate Yearly Progress. The title says it all...it is a Time for Action. Memorizing information to pass a test doesn't teach you anything and it sure does not show a childs true potential. I work at a University and teach a freshman class to help them figure out what major might work best for them. I try to focus a lot on experiential education and being invested in their education. I hated school until I went back at age 28 and got into a major that had meaning and met my needs. I was able to graduate with a degree in Recreation Management and Leisure Studies...I then went on to get a master's degree in Experiential Education. I am a hands on learner and learn through discussion and was lucky enough to find something that worked for me and LOVED what I was learning. With ADHD, if it isn't of interest I have a hard time listening...lecture style never worked for me.
It is time to change the educational system that will help students learn and not just memorize so schools can meet Yearly Adequate Progress. I encourage you to read it and help make a change for the better for all students.
