9 year old daughter...ADD? Frustrated over the years! How to start the process??
Hi- my daughter has always been my turtle. When she was young, she took her time getting things done. I always thought it was just her personality. She has never been hyper, but she is very creative and sweet. Through preschool and through grades K-3, she was regarded in school as smart, but often lacked focus, organization, and getting tasks done in time. But whenever I asked the school if ADD was a possibility, they said no, she will grow out of it. Now she is in 4th grade. She failed the standardized tests done last year, and was placed in small group instruction classes. I knew it was going to happen when her teacher said she was daydreaming during the test. But now, in 4th grade, she isn't finishing tests in time, and even though she is a great storyteller, her teacher says she lacks organizational thoughts. So...I am in the process of getting her evaluated.
I am ok with her getting help if she needs it. But, after researching meds for ADD, I am not sure about what would work best for her. The side effects sound awful! Do I go through the pediatrician, the school, the hospital? I am so overwhelmed! I just want her to succeed. Please help! Are these ADD symptoms? Am I doing the right thing? Thank you!
