Major problems with my 5 yr and school

My 5 year was evaluated and diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year. They said that he was smarter than the average kid his age. He is now in 1st grade but since kindergarten he has been having major behavioral problems i.e. hitting, yelling at the staff as well as running away from them, he even had tried to bite as well. This week has been rough. He's now in a class with 12 kids and school starts at 8:10 am and twice this week the school was calling before 10:00 am for him to be picked up because he was out of control to the point they had to call security and mentioned calling 911 smh. At home he does not display any of this behavior. He'll be fine the night before and the morning of school and once he gets on the bus something happens. He is a little hyper, impulsive and hard headed when he's with me but he can be so sweet and kind. He's not on any medication and my worst nightmare is that he will have to be because of fear of the side/long term effects. I just the other day started him on organic foods and I'm hoping that will help in some way. I work a full time job that I just started a month ago and everyday this week I've had to go in the bathroom and cry. This is so frustrating. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

5 year old

HI - I saw no one had replied yet. Wish I could offer you some solutions. BUT I logged onto to try and find some myself. My son is 1 month into Kindergarten and hating school. Goes the principal all the time; can't sit criss cross applesauce easily. Sits on people, getting angry, yelling. He also is not so bad at home. I do have to say that am am going back to the GF/CF diet. I did it for just a few weeks recently and it made somewhat of a difference. I am not entirely sure it was taking out the gluten and dairy, however it does limit the sugar by default. Although i still can make him peanut butter cookies and we made orange sorbet and pumpkin pancakes. So tehre are treats for sure. After a couple of weeks on it my son asked for a carrot and glass of soy milk for a snack! What - was that MY son? I usually asks for sugar. I mean really...straight up sugar. I did it at home on a strict basis but still had him eat the school lunch, so obviously it was a little relaxed and it still make a difference. I laxed on it as my husband is not really supportive (in talk only.) So i encourage you to do that. Trader Joes has a whole list of items on their website you can print off. On another note has your school/teacher ever set up a reward system? I am meetinwt w/his teacher tomorrow to set something up. - Marisa

RE: Major problems with my 5 yr and school

I have a similar problem with you. My 8 year old DD disrupts classes all the time and she can't seem to catch up with their class. I was worried that she won't be able to pass the grade and the teachers are not that helpful because they don't know what to do. That's when I started looking for an alternative school for my daughter. I needed a school that can help my daughter with an environment that will help nurturing and trained staffs that know how to handle with ADHD. I found some really good schools and I enrolled her to one near our home and she is progressing really well. They have a small class so the teachers can help each students to any subjects that are difficult for them. They also have breaks from class so the kids won't get restless much from being cooped up in the classroom. I suggest you try looking for an alternative and see what you think from there. :)
