charter school says no longer needs IEP
My grandson started in public school special ed classes at 3 y.o. for tested and confirmed dx of developmental language delay. He entered a private parochial school in 1st grade after doing K4 and K5 in the public school system. Our city public school system has lost accreditation due to performance problems and school board was taken over by the state. He entered a startup Charter School in 4th grade after his parochial school closed. He had been receiving after-school special ed services for private school students as per IEP and in 2nd grade was further dx'd as ADHD and pediatrician started Adderall . School had suggested testing due to performance issues. Med did help. But due to weight loss from poor appetite mom keeps him off meds during summer. He is now in 5th grade at Charter School. At his final schoolyear IEP team said they felt he no longer needed special help and were going to use their own school resources to help with any learning problems. They did say he needed to be on medication while at school but were going to drop IEP. He is already struggling in 2nd week! His mom is also ADHD and was in special ed and on Ritalin in school and is now on Adderall herself. Can his Charter School just stop his IEP and special services like that. I told my daughter to protest to school. What else can she do. She is feeling overwhelmed!
